Penny Mordaunt becoming the star of the show was not something we had on our Coronation bingo cards. But the Tory MP united onlookers far and wide yesterday with her impressive contribution to proceedings.
As leader of the House of Commons, the former Splash contestant was invited to play a core role in the ceremony – core being the operative word.
Penny was required to lug about a huge sword – the Jewelled Sword of Offering, to be precise – which has a thick hilt encrusted with diamonds, rubies and emeralds.
Her poised posture and calm demeanor left social media users in awe of her strength, and she revealed she’d been doing press-ups in preparation for the big moment. But that wasn’t the only reason Penny won hearts.
Her outfit, a commissioned blue dress with a hint of teal from the London based label Safiyaa, will no doubt go down in history as one of the most memorable of the day.

She paired it with a hat from the milliner Jane Taylor, both featuring a fern motif embroidered by the atelier Hand & Lock.
So iconic was the look, that Rylan even tweeted Penny to ask if he could borrow it for Eurovision.
We’d love to recreate such Coronation chic for say, a trip to the local Tesco. But alas, this look was a one-off, and it should probably stay that way.
But a paired back version of the Roni Poseidon Midi Dress by Safiyaa, without the personalised embroidery, is available to purchase online for £1,195.

Or for those who want to bring a tiny bit of Penn into their wardrobe in a more wearable way, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite teal looks on the high street.
